The Shanxi-style drama, Liberation, made its way to the Wuxi Grand Theater on March 17 as a prelude for the theater's month-long drama festival.

The drama is directed by Zhang Jigang, a famous dancer and scriptwriter, and integrated a mixture of dialogue, singing and dancing. Liberation tells of a painful love story in the early 19th century at a small village in Shanxi province.

Small feet were signs of women’s beauty at that time of the play’s depiction. The cultural phenomenon resulted in women binding their feet to avoid them growing, causing deformation. The play’s Liang Liang and Xiao Xiao knew each other since childhood and later fell in love. Xiao didn't bind her feet but Liang didn't care. Liang left home for three years to make money in order to marry Xiao. In the meantime, Xiao started to bind her feet because she thought her big feet would embarrass her future fiancé. When Liang came back with a pair of normal-sized embroidered shoes, Xiao could no longer stand up.

Liberation is regarded by some critics as a dancing masterpiece and shows the innocence and vigorous vitality of young girls before the foot-binding process. A total of 80 actresses gave an amazing foot dance in its first performance at the festival. In addition, the drama embraced the Shanxi dialect and dozens of Shanxi folk musical pieces, increasing its artistic appeal.
