As Wuxi Party secretary, Li Xiaomin, fired the starter's pistol, a record 30,000 runners set off from the city's Taihu Avenue at 7:30am, March 20, marking the start of the 2016 Wuxi International Marathon.

  

A total of 30,000 runners, including 15,000 in the full marathon, 10,000 in the half marathon and 5,000 in the mini marathon cram themselves on Taihu Avenue waiting for the starter's pistol at the 2016 Wuxi International Marathon, on March 20.

 

 

 

With 15,000 runners in the full marathon, 10,000 in the half marathon and 5,000 in the mini marathon this year, the event, co-organized by the Chinese Athletic Association, the Jiangsu Sports Bureau and the Wuxi government, has become the biggest marathon event in Jiangsu province.

Runners started from various locations including Lixi Road, Taihu Avenue, via Turtle Head Island scenic spot, Lihu Lake, Changguangxi Wetland Park, Wuxi Grand Theater, and Jiangnan University, and finally arrived at the south gate of Wuxi Sports Center to complete the 42 kilometer full marathon.

In terms of safety, the organizers prepared 17 ambulances, 260 emergency medical volunteers and more than 100 AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators). There were supply spots every two kilometers after the first five kilometers, offering runners fruit and refreshments.

"I am a fan of the Wuxi marathon," said Fang Yihan, captain of CE (Credit Ease) Running Club, "Running by the beautiful Taihu Lake brightens everyone up!"

Runners in high-spirits, wear pink-themed T-shirts, gloves and wristbands, as is tradition at the Wuxi International Marathon. 

As for the full marathon results, Tadesse Yae Dabi of Ethiopia won the men's title in 2:15:24, followed by Kenyans Hillary Kipkogei and Laban Kipkemoi Moiben. Yeshumie Ayalew Ejigu of Ethiopia won the women's title in 2:42:06, followed by another two Kenyan runners, Naomi Nduta Njiri and Rosaline David.
